The famous archaeological site at Igbo Ukwu in Nigeria produced a number of remarkable objects cast in bronze including a vessel to pour libations with detailed surface decoration. The surface is covered with small circles and a serpent whose head is moving upwards to the large opening. It is an interest set of images difficult to understand or ascribe a particular use. Though this bronze vesseal is a relatively late work when compared to the early historical example from Igbo-Ukwu, it is important to note is that the skill of the Nigerian bronze and brass casters of today who cast this vessel continue a tradition nearly 1500 years old and have not lost their skill in producing interesting works of art.
