The grinding and pounding of grains using large mortars and pestles is endemic to West Africa and, for that matter, much of the world. The carefully carved and elegantly worn pestle that is presented here could be from a number of cultures. It is unusual in that it is double-headed. Most everyday objects used in Africa for the preparation of food, particularly pestles, are quite simple. Although simplicity applies to this piece as well, it was obviously carved with care, so the ceremonial use of this pestle cannot be ruled out.
Both the end and the tip of the pestle are discolored from use grinding different materials in a mortar. This pestle was used by women as pounder in food preparation. The center is decolored from extensive use . This pestle has a great patina from extensive use.
