Type of Object:
Double Headed  Mortar PESTLE Grain Pounder
    20th c.

The grinding and pounding of grains using large mortars and pestles is
endemic to West Africa and, for that matter, much of the world. The
carefully carved and elegantly worn pestle that is presented here could
be from a number of cultures.

It is unusual in that it is double-headed.  Most everyday objects used in
Africa for the preparation of food, particularly pestles, are quite simple.
Although simplicity applies to this piece as well, it was obviously carved
with care, so the ceremonial use of this pestle cannot be ruled out.

Both the end and the tip of the pestle are discolored from use grinding
different materials in a mortar. This pestle was used by women as
pounder in food preparation. The center is decolored from extensive
use . This pestle has a great patina from extensive use.
